Who We Are

Soroptimist is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. More than 76,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories support community-based and global projects benefiting women and girls. The organization is particularly concerned with providing women and girls access to education, as this is the most effective path to self-determination.

The name Soroptimist means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best. Soroptimist International, headquartered in Cambridge, England, has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations. Soroptimist International is composed of four federations: Soroptimist International of the Americas which is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and comprises 28 regions with more than 34,000 members in approximately 1360 clubs in 19 countries. The other three federations are SI of Great Britain and Ireland, SI of Europe, and SI of South West Pacific.

Soroptimist International of the Americas’ major service project is the Women’s Opportunity Awards Program: cash grants for women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional education and training. Each year almost $1 million in LIVE YOUR DREAMS AWARDS aid women who, as heads of their households, must enter or return to the work force in order to support themselves and their families.

As a service organization, Soroptimist offers women a unique opportunity to be involved in meaningful community, regional, national, and international service projects with professional women from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultural experiences.

Soroptimist International of Middletown was chartered on October 8, 1955. Our club is part of District II of the Midwestern Region. Our region includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
